Davis Companies Day Tank Replacement with Highland Tank

CommTank provided a removal and installation service for The Davis Companies location in Waltham Massachusetts. Our crews removed one 50-gallon aboveground fuel storage day tank (ASDT), removed one 300-gallon aboveground storage tank, removed one pump set and installed one 500-gallon Highland double-wall aboveground storage tank (AST) in the generator room.

Submittals and Inspections

  • Provided installation drawings, plans and cut sheets to Local Fire Department
  • Performed post-installation inspection

50-gallon Day Tank Removal

  • Pumped oil from AST into a holding tank
  • Removed all pumpable contents and tank bottom
  • Disconnected and removed fill and vent pipe
  • Removed and transported the day tank to a licensed scrap yard

300-gallon AST Tank Removal

  • Pumped oil from AST into a holding tank
  • Removed all pumpable contents and tank bottom
  • Disconnected and removed fill and vent pipe
  • Created a man-way into the AST
  • Measured explosive gases with a 4-gas meter
  • Entered and cleaned the inside of the AST
  • Cut tank into small sections
  • Disconnected fill and vent pipe inside the building and cutoff pipes on top of the AST
  • Removed and transported tank sections to a licensed scrap yard

Pump Set Removal

  • Drained and disconnected pump set
  • Drained and disconnected piping
  • Loaded and transported pump set and related pipes

500-gallon Aboveground Storage Tank Installation

  • Temporary removed vent from the generator room
  • Entered new tank through the external building wall vent opening
  • Provided and installed one Highland 500-gallon dual wall UL-142 Aboveground Storage Tank
  • Provided and installed 15-gallon remove fill
  • Provided and installed 2” mechanical fuel gauge with drop tube and vent overfill vent alarm
  • Provided and installed 4" emergency relief vent for the primary containment and interstitial space of the secondary containment
  • Provided and installed new oil pipes from tank to existing supply and return pipes; consisting of a 1/2" steel suction and 3/4" return pipe connected from the generator to the new 500-gallon AST
  • Pressure tested all new oil piping
  • Transferred fuel from holding tank into the new AST
  • Reinstalled the generator vent
