Tank Installation

CommTank pre-inspected all equipment and materials (including a pre-installation pressure test) and installed a dual compartment 11,500-gallon (8,000 gasoline/3,500 diesel) double-wall fiberglass underground storage tank (UST) with 30-year manufacturer guarantee. Tank supports and anchoring devices were installed with two 42" total containment sumps. A Stage I Vapor Recovery System was furnished and set up at the fill port (Stage I system prevents escape of vapors during a gasoline delivery). Double-wall flexible suction piping was connected to the dispenser and two 2" schedule 40 steel vent pipes with approved vent caps were mounted on the existing building wall 12' above ground level.

Crews poured a new concrete pad for the dispenser and installed two bollards located in front of dispenser. A new gas/diesel dispenser pad with suction pump, gallon reader, hose and handle was positioned on the cement pad and bolted in place.

Tank Testing

Each compartment was pressurized to 4 pounds per square inch (PSI) and held pressure for more than one hour. A vacuum pressure of –15 PSI was applied to the UST secondary containment and held for over a 24-hour period. The primary containment on the product supply lines was pressurized at 50 PSI and held pressure for over a 24-hour period. The secondary containment for the product supply lines was pressurized at 4 PSI and hold pressure for over a 24-hour period.

Fuel Management System

CommTank provided and installed a Veeder-Root TLS 300C Tank Management System with spill and overfill prevention measures sufficient to fulfill the requirements of 527 CMR 9.00. The Veeder-Root System tests for liquid at the interstitial space (between the inner tank and outside containment). It measures the amount of gas or water (if any) inside the tank and will trigger an alarm in case the tank exceeds its filling capacity. The system is able to detect if the underground supply and return lines develop a leak.

After placing fuel in the tanks, satisfactory operation of the monitoring system was verified prior to the system being placed into operation. Operation of the secondary containment system and overfill prevention devices, impact valves and line leak detectors were also tested.
